Many records, including birth, death and marriage (BDMs) are maintained by the various Australian state and territory governments, and there are separate genealogical societies for each area.

The National Archives of Australia is the official repository for records of the Australian Federal Government.
The Archives of Australia web site is the gateway to archives and repositories across the country.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS), commonly known as the Mormons, collect many records of interest to the family history researchers. Their Family History Centres are open to the public at no charge.

Strictly speaking, a coat of arms is owned by one person, and handed on to that person's heir.There is not really any such thing as a family coat of arms shared by all people with a particular surname.A "crest" is just one part of a coat of arms. The College of Arms has more information on heraldry.
