Let's Talk Adoption
On at 8 am PST and again at 8 pm PST at www.LetsTalkAdoption.com, the radio show, "Let's Talk Adoption" the topic will be "Follow Your Heart – Search and Reunion in a Closed Adoption".

Host, Mardie Caldwell and author and adoptee, Lori Paris will discuss Lori’s experience in a closed adoption and her search and reunion with her birth parents. Before you begin the search for your own birth parents or assist your child in his, prepare yourself by listening to this thought-provoking interview that may very well change your life.

A closed adoption can carry with it unique and difficult challenges for an adoptee. For many, whether – and how -- to pursue a birth parent search can be one of the most difficult challenges. Interested in search and reunion? Consider this:
  • What is involved?
  • How and where will you begin?
  • Are you ready to handle the consequences of a completed search and reunion?

  • If you have an adoption reunion story that you would like to share here at About Adoption, please email me at adoption@about.com. I would be glad to hear both the good and the bad. All stories are of a benefit to those searching.

    Adoption in the Media
ER just had a wonderful episode on an adoption reunion between character Carrie Weaver and her birth mother. I found it to be very touching and not over the top with "I did the right thing" stuff. Helen, birth mom, talked about wanting to parent Carrie, how it broke her heart, and thought of Carrie daily.
What did you think of this episode of ER? Bring your thoughts to the forum.
What do you think of the past depictions of adoption on TV? From "Who's Your Daddy?", "Friends", "The Starting Over House", Dr. Phil's Families and many of his adoption specials what are your opinions on the way adoption is portrayed. Let's hear from all sides of the triad on this one!

    A Happy Reunion Story
One woman's journey to locate her birth family brings many surprises and answers to questions. Having been raised as an only child in her adoptive home, she is pleased to find siblings and a large family. From our newest contributing author, Loretta Love Huff,

"I realize how blessed I am to have had such a positive experience. I recognize that all reunion stories don’t have such a happy ending. I still wish I could have laid my head on Marjorie’s breast again, have hugged and heard her breath and heartbeat. In the absence of all of that, I’m delighted with how it all turned out."
Follow Loretta on her adoption search in her article, A Happy Reunion Story.

With adoption being part of the plot line it is also a fitting way to bring adoption and talk of adoption reunions into your family. So 'mush' to the video rental store and pick up a copy of Snow Dogs for the kids this weekend.

    Journal Questions
My memories are very important to me. Sometimes I get upset when I can't remember the words to the songs my mother used to sing or the name of my grandmother's favorite baseball team. I wish I had written these things down. Keeping a journal is one thing we can encourage our foster or older adopted children to do now, when memories of their birth homes are fresh.

A journal or a lifebook can also help children deal with the grief and loss of being in foster care or of being adopted.
Sometimes a list of questions can help get the process started.
