Do Your Children Love Dinosaurs? It's amazing how many children love dinosaurs. Some love funny stories about dinosaurs, some imagine having one for a pet, and many children are eager for factual information about dinosaurs. As a result, there are a great many children's books about dinosaurs. After reading 70+ dinosaur books, I have selected my Top 10 Children's Books About Dinosaurs. The first seven are excellent nonfiction books, including several about dinosaur expeditions and several detailed reference books. The last three are a wordless book, a picture book, and a beginning reader, all of which contain imaginative and amusing stories about dinosaurs. Thursday February 10, 2005#
Artist and Writer Ezra Jack Keats As his online biography recounts, "Long before multicultural characters and themes were fashionable, Ezra Jack Keats crossed social boundaries by being the first American picture-book maker to give the black child a central place in children’s literature." In case you aren't aware of Ezra Jack Keats and his books, particularly his Caldecott Medal winner, “The Snowy Day,” you will want to check out ”Keats's Neighborhood,” a collection of his popular stories for young children, illustrated with his unique artwork, a blending of gouache with collage. Resources for Teaching “Because of Winn-Dixie” "Because of Winn-Dixie," a 2001 Newbery Honor Book by Kate DiCamillo, is a terrific novel for 9-12 year olds. The producer of the new movie version, Walden Media, has developed a 20-page Activity Guide for teachers that you can download. It “...complies with national standards in Language Arts, Social Studies, Visual Arts and Character Education...” Walden Media has also set up a discussion board for teachers who plan to teach “Because of Winn-Dixie” using both the book and the movie. The movie opens on February 18, 2005.
