| LYCOS SEARCH REPORTS NICK BERG IS NUMBER ONE WEB SEARCH TERM OVER PAST 24 HOURS
WALTHAM, Mass. - May 13, 2004 - Terra Lycos (NASDAQ: TRLY), the global Internet Group, today announced the following information from The Lycos 50TM the 50 most popular Web user searches. For a complete list of The Lycos 50TM and for in-depth text of The Lycos 50 Daily Report, go to http://50.lycos.com.
The Lycos 50 today reports that Nick Berg is the new number one search term on the Lycos Search engine over the past 24 hours. The top 10 search requests Web users are specifically searching for regarding Nick Berg are: Nick Berg video, Nick Berg Beheading, Nick Berg and Iraq, Nick Berg Execution, Nick Berg Beheading Video, Nick Berg Killing, Nick Berg murder, Nick Berg assassination, Nick Berg decapitation video, and execution of Nick Berg.
The video showing the beheading of U.S. captive Nick Berg, combined with the multitude of searches for the War in Iraq and searches for the Iraqi prisoners of war, is generating 12 times more search activity more than any other search term on this list.
At the onset of the Iraq War, when Al-Jazeera chose to run video of the American POWs, Al-Jazeera was the number one search term with Web users. Over the past 24 hours, the video of U.S. captive Nick Berg is showing a similar trend to the Al Jazeera searches, completely surpassing Internet search terms, such as Paris Hilton, Clay Aiken and Britney Spears, which Web users search for routinely. As evident when kidnappers released a video of kidnapped reporter Daniel Pearl on the Internet, newsworthy video and photos drive search activity, especially when North American television media outlets choose not to air such videos and photos.
"Earlier this week, before news of the Berg video had surfaced, the Iraq War was the number one search term on Lycos, for the first time ever," said Dean Tsouvalas, writer of The Lycos 50. "Web users continue to search for Iraqi prisoner of war photos, generating twice as much search activity surrounding Iraq than during the onset of the war in March 2003."
