Nokia today introduced the Near Field Communications (NFC) shell announced last year for the Nokia 3220. The Nokia NFC shell enables users to pay for items from debit or credit accounts simply by touching a point of sales device. Additionally, the device can act as an electronic ticket.

In the first live NFC-based public transport ticketing showcase of its kind, Nokia 3220 mobile phones will be tested within the local bus network in the city of Hanau, near Frankfurt, Germany.

The Nokia NFC shell will be available in mid 2005 through carriers. Both Visa and Mastercard have signed on to work with Nokia on the service.

The HP PhotoSmart 945, featuring an 8x optical zoom lens and a 7x digital zoom (for 56x total), is one of the most affordable "big zoom, big megapixel" digital cameras on the market. Geared for the advanced amateur, it features a 5.3-megapixel resolution, advanced photo features, and a wide variety of manual controls. But it also has such automatic features as an on-camera wizard for getting the best shot, direct printing, and HP's Instant Share.

Optics and Resolution
With its 5.3-megapixel resolution, you can snap bright, detailed images with the PhotoSmart 945 that can be enlarged to poster size. It features two resolution options: 2608 x 1952 (5 MP) and 1296 x 976 (1 MP). The Fuji Photo lens has an 8x optical zoom that's coupled with a 7x digital zoom for a 56x total zoom. It has a focal range of 7.6-61mm (35 mm equivalent: 37-300mm).

Movie Mode
In addition to taking still photos, the PhotoSmart 945 can also record up to 60-second movie clips with sound at a 288 x 208 pixel resolution. The QuickTime Motion JPEG format offers a limited resolution, which is great for capturing a short movie that can be e-mailed to friends and family, but is no replacement for a true camcorder.

More Features
The 945 also includes HP's new, exclusive Adaptive Lighting technology, which balances brightness relationships between bright and dark areas in a photo, preserving gentle contrasts but compressing harsh contrasts. With clear and easy to use "low", "high" and "off" settings, the camera automatically balances shots by lightening specific areas within a photograph.

HP's on-camera help allows you to access quick and clear guidance on how to take the best picture with the HP PhotoSmart 945 digital camera's wide ranging functions. In addition, its enhanced manual controls allow concurrent photos to be taken through "burst" mode without having to wait for the camera to prepare before each shot. Other available creative controls include aperture, ISO, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, color and sharpness

With HP's Instant Share feature, you can customize your camera with e-mail aliases and distribution lists of your family and friends. For each picture, you can designate up to 14 destinations, including e-mail addresses, compatible printers, and more.

Other features include:

  • Large 2-inch LCD monitor
  • Built-in flash with auto, on, off, night, and red-eye reduction modes
  • Print photos directly to select HP PhotoSmart printers and all-in-one devices via include USB cable
Optional Camera Dock
The PhotoSmart 945 is also compatible with the HP PhotoSmart 8881digital camera dock, which enables you to easily transfer images to your PC or charge a set of included rechargeable batteries. Cutting down on desktop clutter, this convenient remote-controlled device enables you to easily transfer image files to your PC, print photos, or even view images on TV--all in one easy step

Storage and Transfer
The PhotoSmart 945 is compatible with Secure Digital (SD) MultiMedia (MMC) memory cards; a 32 MB SD card is included. When shooting in Best mode (2608 x 1952), you can store 11 images on the included memory card. Images can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via USB 1.1, which means the camera can be connected to any USB-based Windows Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software.

Power and Size
The camera is powered by 4 AA batteries (alkalines included, rechargeables recommended). It measures 4.84 by 3.35 by 3.35 inches and weighs 13.7 ounces excluding the batteries or 15.7 ounces when loaded with batteries.

What's In The Box
This package includes the HP PhotoSmart 945 digital camera, 32 MB SD memory card, neck strap, 4 AA alkaline batteries, USB cable for camera to PC, USB cable for camera to printer, and dock insert for use with optional HP PhotoSmart 8881 Camera Dock. It also comes with a CD-ROM featuring HP Photo & Imaging software for Microsoft Windows and Macintosh and ArcSoft Funhouse.

The Suunto X6HR wrist-top computer/timepiece provides you with tools for analyzing and improving your performance in your favorite endurance sport. It combines a heart rate monitor (with a transmitter belt) and an altimeter that comes with the included Suunto transmitter belt. The Suunto X6HR records and stores data for later analysis, and you can view, compare, and analyze your performance with a specially designed PC software. It also features a barometer, digital compass, chronometer, and clinometer (for measuring slope angle). This wrist-top computer also comes in another version--the stainless steel X6HRM.

A combined altimeter and heart rate monitor is a practical tool for all outdoor and endurance sports activities, helping you find the ideal training level or the most suitable hiking pace and understand the impact of altitude and topographic factors on heart rate. The chronometer records altitude and heart rate profiles at 2-, 10-, or 60-second intervals and has virtually an unlimited capacity for split/lap times. It also offers an interval timer for circuit training and repetitions.

You can transfer and store the logs you have recorded with your Suunto X6HR to your PC. The logs can be either Hiking logs stored in the Suunto X6HR logbook files, weather logs stored in the weather memory, or Chrono logs stored in the chrono memory. When the data has been transferred, you can organize, view and add related information to it, and create charts with the Suunto Activity Manager software.

The Suunto X6HR comes packed with solutions enabling safe and responsible hiking. You can use the alarm functions to alert you at certain altitudes, help maintain safe climbing speed on the mountains, or indicate an upcoming storm. You will be much better off using the compass and altimeter if caught in bad weather. The compass also guides you back when running in an unknown place or just strolling around in a foreign city.

The Suunto X6HR is water resistant, tested to 100 meters/330 feet according to ISO 2281 standard, which means you can use it for swimming or other water sports activities--but it should not be used for scuba diving or freediving.

The Logbook feature allows you to save information regarding, for example, a hiking trip. When you start the logbook, it starts gathering information about the cumulative ascents and descents, average ascent and descent rates, highest and lowest points and specific marks you can set during the trip. When you stop the logbook, the information gathered thus far is recorded as a logbook file that can be viewed later. The maximum duration of one logbook is 168 hours (one week). The Suunto X6HR can store 20 logbook files at one time. More

The Suunto Activity Manager (SAM) is software that enables deeper understanding and better graphical representation of the data recorded and stored by Suunto X6HR. With SAM you can visualize the altitude and heart rate profiles for your routes, analyze and plan your training, and keep a training diary. You can also create your own activity reports by adding photos and text to the profiles.

Suunto Sports Community The SuuntoSports.com Internet site enables you to share information with other cross-sport enthusiasts from around the world. You can share statistics, learn new things, exchange ideas, and pick up useful tips from people equally passionate about sport. You can also upload your data from Suunto Trek Manager to SuuntoSports.com in order to compare your performance with others, relate tales of your wildest adventures or simply share your hiking and training experiences, travel reports and digital photos with friends or the entire

What's in the Box This package contains the Suunto X6HR wrist-top computer, transmitter belt, 3-volt lithium cell (for belt), CD-ROM with Suunto Activity Manager software and operating instructions, and printed Quick Guide and Pocket Guide.

However coy she might be in her public statements, Britney Spears leans more than a bit toward the provocative on In the Zone. Less concerned with aiming at the mainstream radio dial than in the first days of her career, she and her collaborators make this as street and club ready a record as possible. The opening duet with Madonna, "Me Against the Music," is worthy, but the bigger superstar’s presence serves almost less as a performance than a key to Britney’s intentions: as Madonna did on albums such as Erotica , Ray of Light, and Music, she’s out to bend current trends to her needs. R. Kelly, Moby, and Ying Yang Twins all provide stirring moments that draw on everything from Bollywood to Southern hip-hop, while one of the most impressive tracks, "Touch of My Hand," joins the proud tradition of Cyndi Lauper’s "She Bop." She still lacks a fully formed artistic vision of her own, but Zone, with its many get-free anthems, puts her much closer. --Rickey Wright

Yes, she did. Even if the title track's chorus is a blatant rip-off of the Barbra Streisand/Barry Gibb duet, "Woman in Love," it's still darn catchy--much more than anything from 1999's ...Baby One More Time (save the album's fab title tune, of course). With the rest of the 12 songs here, the teen queen pretty much delivers a remake of her last album. Songs like "What U See (Is What U Get)" and "Stronger" show Swedish songwriter-producer Max Martin in his element, churning out another and yet another slick smash with staccato synth beats and heavily overproduced melodies. But even at his strongest points, he can't bury Britney's voice far enough below the virtual guitars--and it's obvious this girl ain't no Celine. Except for the horrendous ballads, however, that doesn't make a stitch of a difference. The pop songs have all the qualities of memorable tunes--the choruses are clear and catchy, the beats are bouncy enough to make you shake your bonbon, and the singer is about as randy for love as Austin Powers is for a shag. Edit out the low-water mark--when Britney mutilates the Rolling Stones' misogynist anthem, "Satisfaction," by oversexualizing it with inserted "uh"s ("I can't get no, uh, satisfaction")--and you've got a hit-packed album that's as guilty a pleasure as reruns of Beverly Hills 90210. --Heidi Sherman
