LIVE MUSIC STU, MEET PID AT CLUB 279 TONIGHT! Yesterday wasn't exactly what I'd call a stellar day for our little paper, what with the mixed-up headlines and a goof par extraordinaire by yours truly regarding the Closer to the Heart benefit. Just so you're perfectly clear on it, it's TONIGHT at Club 279 (279 Yonge St., above the Hard Rock Cafe). The fourth annual musical benefit in support of the Regent Park School of Music features a band containing Kurt Swinghammer, Blue Rodeo's James Gray, John Obercian and Terence Gowan, plus some of Canada's best vocalists singing great Canuck tunes. Some of the vocalists confirmed are Broken Social Scenester Kevin Drew, Metric's Emily Haines, Sloan's Chris Murphy and many, many more! Best of all, the proceeds go to a school committed to giving one of the greatest gifts in the world - the gift of music - to kids who lost that opportunity when governments severely curtailed budgets for music education. Doors open at 8:30 p.m., and tickets are $25 at the door. Call (416) 362-3636 for more info.
GO TO CLUB 279, BUT IF YOU DON'T... There's always refried 90s-era Dutch alt rockers Bettie Serveert, who play the Horseshoe Tavern (370 Queen St. W.) tonight, along with openers Petit Project and Human Deluxe. Tickets are $10 advance, and Human Deluxe gets things started at 9:30 p.m. Call (416) 598-4753 for details.
CLUBS GET YOUR JOLLIES West-end small venue Caffe Bar Jolly (165 Dufferin St.) is carving a niche for itself as the place to be if you want to see high-quality jazzy house music. So if you're not going to Club 279 tonight, go west and get your Jollies with DJs Addy and Paranoid Jack. They'll be joined by residents Miroslav and Mute. No cover charge, and everything gets underway at 10 p.m. Call (416) 538-3662 for more info.
THE LIVING ARTS NO SEX PLEASE, WE'RE TORONTONIANS! Just in the nick of time for NOWMagazine's annual Love and Sex issue, which should be on newsstands right about now, comes a special screening of Sex and Celebrity, the premiere episode of CBCNewsworld's ground-breaking documentary series on women and sexuality. Tonight, you can catch a free screening and discussion featuring comic Sandra Shamas, author Susan Swan, and filmmaker Francine Pelletier at the CBC Broadcast Centre's Glenn Gould Studio (250 Front St. W.). Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and you can get details and reserve your free ticket by calling (416) 205-3876.
THE PUBLIC IS INVITED ... TO GO TO CLOSER TO THE HEART AT CLUB 279! Seriously, you should go to this event. You'll feel good about yourself, and you'll get to see some great musical talent supporting one of Toronto's worthiest causes. I don't often hype an event, but Closer to the Heart deserves every micron of ink I can muster.
