CAREER ADVICE
Recently got this email from Yvonne in Idaho who wrote the Lycos 50...

"Dear Dean & 50,

Saw in your bio that you worked in TV - and at the major networks...I am a college sophomore, majoring in journalism - basically an aspiring News Reporter -and wanted to know if you had any advice on getting started in such a cut-throat industry."

Hey Yvonne-
Best thing you can do is an internship (usually unpaid) at a local or national television station. That is what worked for me. Be positive and see any challenge or assignment as an opportunity to shine. I can remember being asked to pick up gum off the studio floor and doing it with a smile. I always found that people are willing to help you if you show a sincere desire for the gig. It is an incredibly competitive industry, and folks can pick up right away if you don't want it bad enough.

Good Luck & let us know what happens.

FYI...Just about every career path has an internship program. Take advantage of it. And even if they don't let the company know you are willing to create one and work for free. I can't suggest anything better in your career hunt.

NBC has a NBC Page Programwhich is supposed to be great.

BURLESQUE IS BACK
Some would say that the entertainment known as burlesque never went away... According to our favorite dictionary, Burlesque is defined as "A variety show characterized by broad ribald comedy, dancing, and striptease."

Rockabilly is the style of music from the 1950s; sometimes described as blues with a country beat. Anyway at at Viva Las Vegasweekend celebrating Rockabilly there is going to be a burlesque competition. The top performers with the highest votes will perform. Our favorite is Lili VonSchtupp...

THE ROD
A story in today's Boston Globe has sent me into a tizzy. While perusing her edition of Home School Digest a mom who is home-schooling her children learned about this $5 buck child rearing must-have: THE ROD.

"Spoons are for cooking, belts are for holding up pants, hands are for loving, and rods are for chastening," read the advertisement she saw nearly two years ago for the 22-inch nylon rod. It also cited a biblical passage, which instructs parents not to spare the rod of "correction."

This mom has created a petition to stop the rod.

As a parent of young children, and as someone who was threatened by the wooden spoon as a kid, I can understand being frustrated to extremes by ones children. But everything that inspires me about religion and God is contrary to this corporeal punishment tool.

CELL PHONES FOR SOLDIERS
The War in Iraq is still on The Lycos 50, and therefore on the minds of web users. Recently we were inspired by a pair of 12 and 13 year-old siblings. They heard about a U.S. soldier in Iraq who had an enormous cell-phone bill from calling home. This dynamic duo decided to empty their piggy banks and take action. With a little help from a local bank, Cell Phones for Soldiers was born.

You can help by taking your old cell phone and brining it to any of the 1400 Liberty Tax Service offices nationwide. The old phones are sold for recycling and the cash is used to buy calling cards for the troops. So far $60,000 worth of calling cards have been sent to our soldiers.

You can also visit Cell Phones for Soldiers online.

The logs were full of queries looking for information about the devastating tsunami that hit Asia last week. In fact searches for tsunami and earthquake are #1 on The Lycos 50

The other aspect to the searches were related to looking for information on friends and relatives in the area in addition to searches on ways to help.
Here are are a few.
